On the afternoon of May 28th 2012, the first seminar of Dr. Seaker Chan Center for Comparative Political Development Studies was held in room 615, the Wenke Building. Prof. Adam Przeworski from Department of Politics New York University, an internationally renowned political scientist, gave a speech titled “Market, Development and Democracy”, which was hosted by Associate Professor CHEN Zhouwang.

Prof. Adam Przeworski’s research work concerns mainly the way different political institutional arrangements work. The question of how do particular institutions arise and under what conditions they survive and the question of the economic impacts of different institutions. He has two books published and intended to find out what are the political arrangements that are most conducive to economic growth. His new book published last year discussed public’s satisfaction with the way democratic systems work, and the conclusion is that the income redistribution policy brought by democratic elections won’t reduce the economic inequality in society. Yet this proposition still needs further exploration, which is also the focus of his recent work.

After the speech, Prof. Adam Przeworski had in-depth discussions with scholars and students attending the seminar on democracy and data processing.
