Lecture No. 5 of the Dr. Seaker Chan Center for Comparative Political Development Studies was held in room 630, Wenke Building, on the afternoon of September 19, 2012. Prof. Gunter Schubert, Chair of Greater China Studies in University of Tübingen, Germany, lectured on “Some Reflections on the Current State of China’s Political System”. Prof. Guo Dingping from School of International Relations and Public Affairs hosted the lecture.

The lecture centered around the stableness of China’s political system, the legitimacy of China’s political system, as well as understanding China’s current mode of governance and the “resilience” of its political system. According to Prof. Schubert, his own observation and analysis suggests that the system stability (legitimacy) and governance effectiveness of China can be maintained over time as long as there is “limited reform under hierarchy”. But how does the system maintain its legitimacy and governance effectiveness requires further studies.
Teachers and students at the lecture raised questions about Chinese local governments’ collusion, the elastic limit of Chinese politics, the pressurized system, and how to do political research in China etc. and discussed with Prof. Schubert.
