Lecture No. 4 in 2012 of the Dr. Seaker Chan Center for Comparative Political Development Studies was held in room 826, Wenke Building, on the morning of September 18. Prof. Tanjia A. Börzel and Prof. Thomas Risse from Freie Universität Berlin jointly lectured on “European Integration, the Debt Crisis, and Lessons of Asian Regionalism”. Associate Prof. Sebastian Bersick hosted and lecture, and Prof. Chen Zhimin was the commentator.

Prof. Tanjia A. Börzel believed that the European integration experiences can be a model for other regional integration, while the European integration can also draw lessons from other regional integration experiences. The current debt crisis is a key point in the process of European regionalism. She talked in-depth about the relation between European debt crisis and regionalism from three aspects i.e. the origin, management and respond of the European debt crisis. Finally, she compared the differences between regionalism in Europe and Asia. Prof. Thomas Risse compared regionalism from its breadth (policy areas, including trade, monetary, security cooperation and environmental cooperation etc.), depth (including intergovernmental cooperation and supernational cooperation etc.), as well as the interaction and cooperation between regions, pointing out that no models can be simply replicated but should fit the particular situation of a region.
